CALIBER ENTERTAINMENT Caliber Entertainment is based in southeastern Michigan, equal distance from Ann Arbor and Detroit. It started in 1989 and 1991 was the first year of publishing a full line of comics. Caliber Comics has long been recognized as one of the leading independent comic publishers and was one of the first to publish creator owned comics. With this strategy, Caliber quickly established itself as one of the most innovative and daring companies publishing comics. Caliber branched out with its Tome Press line in the mid-90s which featured comics slanted towards historical, biographical, and literary comics. This was joined by the Gauntlet line that featured more traditional action and adventure heroes and the Iconografix line which featured idiosyncratic and humor related titles. In l993, Caliber merged with Stabur Corporation. Stabur, which had a long history of publishing prints, videos, collector jewelry and mass market books, was a perfect compliment to the comic book line of Caliber. The merger immediately paid benefits as Caliber/Stabur was one of the leaders in bringing comics into the mass market though some of the nations largest mass merchandisers with comics produced for Wal-Mart. Non-comic product included Foxs anniversary merchandise for Rocky Horror Picture Show, famous cartoon collector rings, apparel, the Power Cardz card games, books featuring Disney animators, and much more. The Caliber/Stabur company also worked with Todd McFarlane to start up the Spawn line of toys (TMP-Todd McFarlane Toys) with the two principles of Caliber/Stabur taking on positions of CEO and Vice-President with McFarlane as President. Caliber/Stabur continued operations concurrent with the toy company. In late 1996, Caliber assumed Stabur entirely and broke off the connection with TMP. The focus shifted from creator owned titles to those owned entirely by Caliber or had the rights controlled by Caliber. The company has focused on developing internally owned properties and includes the Caliber Core line which is a "universe" containing many of the characters in the "same world". Currently, Caliber has concentrated its activities on packaging the properties it owns and controls and to exploit its line of properties with further development and serving as a production house for publishing rather than distributing all of its own comics.
