The President

Gary Reed

Gary has an extensive background in the comic field as he owned comic book retail outlets (four stores at one time) for 17 years. He re-established the comic book convention in the Detroit area and its successor, Motor City Comic Con, is now the third largest show in the country. During the early 1980’s, Gary created and co-hosted a radio show dealing exclusively with comics for two years and also a television cable access show for one year. His publishing venture in comics began in 1989 with Caliber Comics. For Caliber he has written and created nearly 200 comics and continues to be the major driving force in the creative end of Caliber. Nominated for a Harvey Award for his writing on Baker Street, his writing outside of Caliber includes role-playing games, numerous short stories and poems. He received a Writing Scholarship from Henry Ford Community College.

Gary graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Masters of Science Degree in Biology, specializing in Genetics. While at Eastern Michigan, Gary served as Laboratory coordinator and taught for two years. Classes taught included General Biology, Cell Physiology, and Physiology Lab.

In addition to his duties in managing all aspects of Caliber Comics, Gary assumed control of all aspects of the Stabur Corporation after the merger of the two companies. During his time at Stabur, Gary published a mass market book based on super model, Fabio; worked with News Media Corp. (Longevity, Omni, and Penthouse) in magazine design and possible book exploration; worked on a proposed alliance for the Romantic Times magazine to tie in with the Miss America Pageants; helped to develop a program for the Home Shopping Network to offer famous cartoon prints; coordinated some merchandise of the Rocky Horror Picture Show 20th Anniversary Affair in Los Angeles; and initiated a series of young adult novels featuring the comic book character, Spawn. Under Gary’s guidance, the company also launched a collectible card game called Power Cardz as well as a series of comic books which were sold in mass market outlets such as Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Target, and others.

In 1994, Gary was involved in the launching of a new company, TMP International, and assumed the role of Vice-President. The company was designed to launch a line of action figures based on Spawn, the popular comic. Gary was in charge of advertising and promotion as well as coordinating all media coverage, television advertising, appearances, and explored other avenues for exploitation for Spawn products and licensees. He also helped to form the Collector’s Club which began successfully and showed a return margin of 74% in the first year.

As the growth continued at TMP, which hit over 30 million in sales in just its second year, it was discussed among the owners of TMP about Gary assuming more duties. At that time, Gary decided he would rather focus his attentions solely on Caliber rather than move over to TMP full time.

With Caliber Comics evolving into Caliber Entertainment, Gary continues to create and write comics and many of his recent titles include Renfield, Searchers, Level X, Sinergy, Raven Chronicles, Inferno, Cortez, Red Diaries, Saint Germaine, Seeker, and many more. He has just recently finished a video game script for CapCom, written two graphic novels for Penguin Books, and is working on a biography for an illustrated version of The Beatles.  His Deadworld series was just released from Image Comics and a collection of Saint Germaine is expected in the fall of 2005.
