In a gritty and harsh future world,
Summer Hewson hides with her father in the labyrinth maze of pipes, sewers, and machinery
that runs the top side world. They are fugitives from justice from the powerful
entity known as Entech. Entech surrounds all...it is government, it is
corporations, it is master. When some community leaders and scientists protested,
they were quickly taken away and never seen again...including the Hewson family. The
son (who would later become father of Summer) hid in the sewers with his chess game as his
only possession. Other rebels went there to hide as well and eventually a rebel
force began to grow.
Now 52 years old, the senior Hewson
has seen nearly 4 decades of revolt and to little avail. The surface world has
changed so much that he wouldn't recognize it even if he dared to see it again. The
FSR drug, thought to reduce the birth rate, instead caused a series of birth defects.
The mysterious leader of Entech, Grolsch is believed to have been the victim of the
defect and not only has it crippled his physical body, it has increased the awareness of
his mental state. Grolsch is believed to want to create a new breed of mankind, one
much like him.
Summer is one of the leaders of the
revolution. She is a tough lady that has shown she is a leader. Her lover is
Ian, possibly the best "facer" (computer interfaces) of the rebels. When
Ian enters the computer face world, it is populated by physical manifestations represented
in humanoid form...perfect humanoid form. The plane of existence within the
interface world is different than the surface world and facers adopt almost superhero like
bodies to traverse the circuits.
The secret weapon that Dr. Hewson
is working is a transforming robot called "Checkmate". It morphs into
different incarnations of Chess pieces with each "piece" having unique
abilities. The units are very high tech and deeply specialized.
In a raid by Entech, Dr. Hewson is
killed and Ian's physical body is severely injured while his mind is trapped in an
interface. Summer's only hope of saving Ian is transforming his interfaced mind to a
new receptacle...the Checkmate android. However, the technology was never finished
and Summer must operate the controls while Ian carries out the roles of the pieces that
she transforms him into. Together they must defeat Grolsch and his master plan of
changing not only the people of Entech, but the world itself.
